When you go to WWE.com, the first thing, at this point in time, that flashes across is the screen is an ad speaking of the upcoming ‘I Quit’ match between John Cena and the Miz. Following that ad is another one for the match between World Heavy Weight Champion Randy Orton, and the man he stole the title from in a Smackdown shocker, Christian. All WWE superstars are branded across the website because they all have lasting power. Nearly all have a story behind them.
Some of the guys listed above have been in the business for almost 15+ years.
John Cena, a new comer in comparison to some, started off being this campy, cheesy, wanna be rapper, thug type, white guy. He splashed onto the scene June 27, 2002. He took on Kurt Angle and lost, but the ability to kick out of Angle’s finishing move, the Angle Slam, and enduring the ankle lock, won him fans around the world. He has went through ebbs and flows. At times, the fans like him, and at times they don’t. Regardless, he has been able to remain current in the WWE for the last 9 nine years. A lot of the reason behind this is the fact that he also takes on roles outside of the ring. He has appeared on Hannah Montana and True Jackson as himself, and has starred in three major motion pictures produced by WWE Studios : The Marine, 12 Rounds, and Legendary. All of the movies earned Cena respect and praise as one of the top WWE superstars of this generation.
Cena’s opposition come the next pay per view event is The Miz. The Miz’s story is a bit different than Cena’s, but none the less, he is now one of the major superstars of the day. The Miz dropped out of college, where he was pursuing a degree in business, in order to appear on the tenth season
of MTV The Real World in 2001. From this, he appeared on many of the spin off shows and ultimately landed on the fourth season of Tough Enough. He did not win Tough Enough but he did spike the interest of the WWE and they sent him to the OVW, Ohio Valley Wrestling, to hone his skills. OVW is the stepping stone between amateur wrestling and professional wrestling.
The Miz took this stepping stone and landed a contract with the WWE. With his rants about how awesome he is, The Miz is definitely the superstar that you love to hate. This has contributed wildly to his success as a superstar and his popularity.
Randy Orton and Christian are both very popular superstars with very different stories.
Orton is entrenched in the business. He is the son of the famed ‘Cowboy’ Bob Orton. Knowing from experience the hardships of life as a professional wrestler, Orton's parents tried to convince him to stay away from the business, and his father warned him that life in the ring meant a life on the road and away from family. He graduated high school in 1998 and served a brief stint in the United States Marine Corps, but the ring was calling him. He made his wrestling debut in 2000 with an independent organization. Then, in 2001, he was signed by WWE. He honed his skills in Louisville, Kentucky, at Ohio Valley Wrestling before making his official WWE debut. In the course of 11 years, he went from being a fan favorite, to a self centered villain proclaiming himself a legend killer, and now the current World Heavyweight Champion. Like most popular WWE supertars, he’s loved by many and hated by many.
Christian had a much different rise to fame. He made his wrestling debut in 1995 and has seen a lot of people come and go. He rose to infamous popularity when he joined Gangrel to the form ‘The Brood.’ Given the role of a vampire, Edge joined the brood and they had a successful run as a stable. However, the stable eventually broke up. Christian and Edge formed one of WWE’s most famous tag teams. They were the founders of the TLC match and won the Tag Team Championship numerous times. Like the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. The duo broke up, fought a bit, and Christian moved on into a different spotlight. He left the WWE for a stint, but found his way back.
Being in the business for over 16 years deserves a lot of credit, and Christian is getting it with the support of the fans and the current storyline he’s going through. Make no mistake, he will be around for a while.
All WWE superstars rose to fame in very different ways. From the cliche white boy thug, the boy with family in the business, to the vampire turned epic tag team duo member; WWE is an environment that will chew you up and spit you out if you aren’t to their liking. Through careful branding and storytelling, these four superstars are some of the most relevant today. For this generation, these will be the Ric Flair’s and Hulk Hogan’s of our days.
