The Undertaker and Wrestlemania
When one mentions the WWE’s number one pay per view, and classic moments, the Undertaker and Wrestlemania go hand in hand. Mark Calaway joined WWF and debuted at a Superstars taping in November 19, 1990. He made his official debut three days later at the Survivor series as The Undertaker.
The character was accompanied by his manager Paul Bearer, who carried an urn that houses the Undertakers powers. A lot of people had the thought that the character wouldn’t go over, and would be gone soon, but they would be wrong. To date, the character went through transformations, but has reverted back to his ‘dark’ gimmick a few years back.
One of the character’s main claim to fame is for 18 consecutive Wrestlemanias, The Undertaker has gone undefeated at the WWE’s main pay-per-view. Starting at WrestleMania VII, the Undertaker began his winning streak by doing a squash match against Jimmy Snuka.
The Undertaker and Wrestlemania wins continue on against such superstars as Jake Roberts, Diesel, Kane (two times), Randy Orton, Triple H, Batista, Ric Flair, Edge, and others. Wrestlemania XXV would go on to be one of the best matches the Undertaker would have, as Shawn Michaels would challenge him to a match that surpassed all standards. The main event of Randy Orton, and Triple H couldn’t top even with all the hype behind it.
During the match both men had many close falls, and pulled of some potential career ending moves during the match. In the end the Undertaker came out on top and added another win to his chain of Wrestlemanias. In a lead up to Wrestlemania XXVI, the storyline was that Shawn could beat Taker, but Taker didn’t want to do a sequel match. Finally when Shawn cost Taker his title, the match was made.
There was one stipulation to be made to this re-match. If Shawn lost, he had to retire, which he accepted. In the match itself, it was a repeat of the predecessor: near falls, career ending moves, but in the end, the Undertaker won, and brought Shawn’s career to an end.
When it comes time for the 'Taker to retire, the legacy he will leave behind will definitely include the Undertaker and Wrestlemania.
