WWE Raw Divas an Attractive Attraction
On May 5, 2002 when WWF changed over to WWE, we began witnessing more females being signed on to the wrestling promotion than before. Prior to this date, women were used as managers, and valets, and very few actually wrestled in the ring. WWE Raw Divas were used in ‘male fantasy’ matches such as the ‘Bra and Panties’ match, and "Bikini Contests" to draw male ratings to the show.
Several divas such as Trish Stratus, Lita, and others began to compete for the WWE Women's Title in regular match-ups.
In 2007, the division grew as the Divas began to compete in different types of matches, such as ‘Falls Count Anywhere’, and ‘I quit’ matches. On June 6, 2008, it was announced that the Smackdown brand would have its very own women’s title, aptly named the ‘WWE Divas Championship’.
Both the WWE Raw Diva’s titles changed on the 2009 WWE draft, where the respective champions took their titles to the other brand which was the first time in history that this had ever happened in the WWE.
At the 2010 Night of Champions there was a match the pitted both women’s champions against each other to unify both titles involved. For the first time in 54 years, the WWE Women’s Championship was unified into the Diva’s Championship, and officially retired from active competition.
The Divas usually participate in a photo shoot every year at different locations bound up in an annual magazine published by WWE. Several divas have posed for Playboy, and have starred in commercials.
Once a year, the WWE Raw Divas would have an annual competition for a ‘Diva search’, where the winner received a contract working with the WWE, and also a cash prize of $100,000. This cash prize had dropped in recent years from $250,000. The main function of the search was to find new wrestlers, valets, or interviewers.
